Grenoble Prosecutor Names 79-Year-Old in Alleged Abuse of 89 Minors and Seeks Witnesses

Investigators tallied 89 alleged victims from 15 volumes on a USB drive discovered by the suspect’s nephew.

Overview

  • The suspect, identified as Jacques Leveugle, was charged and jailed in February 2024 for aggravated rapes and sexual assaults dating from 1967 to 2022, then re-detained in April 2025 after breaching strict judicial control.
  • Prosecutor Étienne Manteaux launched a nationwide and international call for witnesses to help identify additional victims, noting only about forty of the 89 have been confirmed so far.
  • The writings detail encounters with minors aged 13 to 17 and reference work with youths across several countries, including Germany, Switzerland, Morocco, Niger, Algeria, the Philippines, India, Colombia and in New Caledonia.
  • A separate investigation was opened after the suspect acknowledged suffocating his terminally ill mother in the 1970s and his 92-year-old aunt in the 1990s.
  • In a separate case in Cannes, a 15-year-old girl was charged with attempted assassination after a knife attack on a classmate and was placed under strict judicial control following a psychiatric assessment noting a mild depressive disorder.
