Grenade-Type IED Found at Alabama Dam Protecting Mobile’s Water Supply

The discovery triggered a federal review of security at Mobile’s main water source.

Overview

  • Divers inspecting the Converse Reservoir dam Tuesday found an underwater explosive and alerted authorities in what MAWSS called an unprecedented threat.
  • The Gulf Coast Regional Maritime Response and Render-Safe Team retrieved the grenade-type device and detonated it safely away from the dam.
  • Responding agencies included the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Police Department bomb unit, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency Bomb Squad, the FBI Bomb Squad, and Daphne Search and Rescue.
  • Officials referred the incident to the Department of Homeland Security, and investigators have not identified a suspect or motive.
  • MAWSS says it will tighten security around the dam, which holds about 17 billion gallons in Big Creek Lake and supplies roughly 60 million gallons of drinking water a day to the area.
