Greggs Trials Self-Service 'Greggs Express' at MFG Forecourt

The company is running short, data-driven pilots with Motor Fuel Group to test whether self-serve units can speed transactions and shape future estate plans.

Overview

  • Greggs opened its first Greggs Express self-service unit this month at Motor Fuel Group’s petrol forecourt outside Glasgow Airport as part of a small trial.
  • The unit lets customers grab bakery items or serve hot drinks themselves using self-checkout terminals to reduce queue times for people on the move.
  • Greggs is working with MFG to monitor customer behaviour and test a limited roll-out of similar travel-hub sites over the coming months before any wider expansion.
  • The Express trial runs alongside other small-format experiments, including three Bitesize sites launched last year and a six-store test of locking items behind counters to cut theft.
  • Outcomes from these pilots will shape where Greggs opens new outlets, how staff work in smaller or self-serve sites, and how the chain balances speed, convenience and security.
