Greens Edge CDU in Baden-Württemberg as Özdemir Poised to Lead

Özdemir prepares to open talks to continue the Green–CDU coalition.

Overview

  • Late projections show the Greens narrowly ahead by roughly 0.2–0.6 points, about 27,000 votes, with final official results still pending.
  • Özdemir offered the CDU a “partnership of equals,” and CDU leader Manuel Hagel congratulated him while ruling out any cooperation or investiture votes involving the AfD.
  • The AfD nearly doubled its vote to around 18–19 percent, becoming the third force and securing at least one direct mandate in Mannheim I, according to the state statistics office.
  • The SPD collapsed to about 5.5–5.6 percent as state leader Andreas Stoch announced his resignation; FDP and The Left fell below 5 percent and are set to miss the Landtag.
  • Turnout was around 70 percent under a new two‑vote system and an expanded electorate that included 16‑ and 17‑year‑olds.
