Greenpeace Blocks Cargo in Dunkirk Over RussiaFrance Uranium Trade as Police End Five-Hour Standoff

The protest over suspected nuclear fuel deliveries led to arrests that now underpin a criminal inquiry for obstruction of work.

Overview

  • Police said 12 activists were detained during the dawn blockade of the Mikhail Dudin, with four placed in custody, and the action ran from 04:10 to 09:10.
  • Prosecutors in Dunkirk opened a judicial inquiry for obstruction of the freedom to work following the port disruption.
  • Greenpeace said it later observed the unloading of 40 containers of natural uranium onto trains and additional enriched-uranium containers onto trucks.
  • Open ship-tracking data show the Mikhail Dudin has made more than 20 round trips between Dunkirk and Russian ports since February 2022, while the Baltiyskiy-202 has made over 15 and is listed by Vessel Finder as due in Dunkirk on March 9.
  • French customs data indicate France imported at least 112 tonnes of enriched uranium from Russia in 2025, as Orano said it has no current uranium contracts with Russian firms, EDF declined comment, and Framatome did not respond.
