Greenfield Police Warn After Post Office Collection Box Is Pried Open

Officials say anyone who used the box during the specified weekend should monitor accounts for fraud and report suspected mail theft to police.

Overview

  • The outdoor USPS collection box at 7353 W. Forest Home Ave. was pried open and mail was taken in the early hours of June 22, police said.
  • Authorities asked anyone who dropped mail in that box between 3 p.m. Saturday and 2 a.m. Monday to closely watch bank and credit accounts and report suspicious activity.
  • The U.S. Postal Inspection Service is assisting Greenfield police and the Postal Service installed a new collection box with stronger locks at the site, officials said.
  • Law enforcement and postal police link the incident to a nationwide rise in mail theft that includes use of universal ‘‘arrow’’ keys to open multiple boxes and a recent six-figure Wauwatosa prosecution.
  • Residents are urged not to mail checks, gift cards or cash, to report stolen mail to local police or the Postal Inspection Service at 877-876-2455, and to act quickly if personal information may be exposed.
