Overview
- Greek authorities are investigating a military sea drone found in a cave off Lefkada with its engine still running and explosives on board, after fishermen secured it and towed it to the port of Vasiliki for the coast guard.
- Defense Minister Nikos Dendias said Greece is certain the device is Ukrainian and called the case extremely serious for the freedom and safety of navigation in the Mediterranean.
- Ukraine rejected that claim, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Georgiy Tykhy saying there is no evidence tying the drone to Ukrainian operators and offering to cooperate with Greek investigators.
- Uforce, the Ukrainian company behind the Magura naval drone, said the recovered craft is not a Magura and does not match its design or specifications, adding that a Magura V3 model does not exist.
- Greek officials say they will act to keep the Mediterranean from becoming a theater of military operations, a stance sharpened by reports of a Ukrainian strike on a Russian tanker in December that raised concerns about weaponized drones in regional waters.
