Greater Manchester Puts £70m Transport Backing Behind Bolton Bid for 2035 Ryder Cup

The infrastructure pledge is intended to strengthen Hulton Park’s case before an expected host decision this summer.

Overview

  • Greater Manchester Combined Authority and Peel plan to submit a joint bid to stage the 2035 Ryder Cup at a purpose-built course at Hulton Park in Bolton.
  • Up to £70m is earmarked for transport, including the Park Avenue link as the first phase of an M61–M6 route, special bus services, and cycling and walking upgrades, with further rail and Metrolink improvements sought.
  • Mayor Andy Burnham said the formal submission is due next month, with organisers widely expected to choose the 2035 host by the end of the summer.
  • Peel holds live planning permission after a 2022 appeal ruling, with limited preparatory works allowed, and the golf scheme’s progression depends on being selected as host.
  • The bid forecasts more than £1.2bn in economic impact and around 350,000 spectators, has public backing from Tommy Fleetwood, and faces rival English venues London Golf Club and Luton Hoo.
