Greater Anglia Sets 8 March Start for Contactless Pay-As-You-Go at 20 Stations, Including Stansted

The change is intended to stop frequent penalty fares for travellers who could not tap out at the airport.

Overview

  • The rollout will cover Stansted Airport plus key stops such as Southend Victoria, Chelmsford, Harlow Town and Bishop’s Stortford.
  • Greater Anglia confirmed the new date after a postponed 14 December launch caused by software and fare-integration issues with TfL systems.
  • Oyster cards remain invalid at all 20 stations, including Stansted and Southend airports, so travellers must use contactless bank cards or devices.
  • The extension is expected to cut penalty fares, with around 16,000 passengers a year previously unable to tap out at Stansted after tapping in at London.
  • Pay-as-you-go will auto-calculate peak and off-peak pricing with daily and weekly caps on TfL services, though stations such as Colchester, Newport and Southminster are not included in this phase.
