Grammys Add Five Categories Including Best Latin Song and Asian Pop Music Performance

The Recording Academy says the changes will better reflect global, streaming-era music.

  • The Recording Academy announced on Tuesday that it will add five new Grammy categories for the 2027 ceremony, notably Best Latin Song for predominantly Spanish songs and Best Asian Pop Music Performance for Asian-language pop.
  • Best Latin Song will award composers for songs with more than 51% Spanish lyrics and will give statuettes to credited songwriters rather than only performers.
  • Best Asian Pop Music Performance is framed to recognize K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other Asian-language pop performances that use one or more Asian languages.
  • The Academy also changed eligibility rules by allowing Best New Artist submissions up to four times and lowering the new-recordings threshold for Best Album from 75% to 66%, and it will award composers of new material on winning genre albums with official statuettes and certificates.
  • The announcement has drawn praise for expanding recognition of global genres and creators and criticism on social media that language- or region-specific categories could isolate non-English artists; nominations and the first lists of nominees will be announced ahead of the Feb. 7, 2027 ceremony.
