Government Raises Price Caps on Cisplatin and Carboplatin by 50%

Regulators invoked Para 19 of the DPCO to offset soaring platinum-related API costs, aiming to restore production within weeks.

Overview

  • The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority issued a one-time 50% increase in ceiling prices for carboplatin and cisplatin on June 11, fixing per‑ml rates to give manufacturers immediate commercial relief.
  • Officials said the Para 19 move responds to large rises in input costs, especially platinum used in APIs, exchange-rate pressures and import constraints that made production commercially unviable.
  • Hospitals and leading cancer centres have reported multiweek shortages that forced treatment delays, dose reductions and substitutions that can reduce effectiveness or raise overall patient costs.
  • The price rise is designed to prompt manufacturers to resume or scale up production, but regulators warned supplies may take several weeks to normalise and patient bills will rise in the short term.
  • An inter-ministerial committee examined applications for 82 scheduled formulations, fast-tracked four for intervention and instructed NPPA to review the revised ceilings within six months.
