Government Names First 27 Neighbourhood Health Centres With £50m Upgrade

The first wave focuses on deprived areas to shift everyday care from hospitals into local hubs.

Overview

  • The Department of Health named 27 sites across England on Thursday and set aside up to £50 million to refurbish and expand existing NHS buildings.
  • Each centre will bring urgent treatment, GP and pharmacy services together and later add physiotherapy, diagnostics, mental health support and help with debt, jobs and family issues.
  • Local Integrated Care Boards will run the hubs, which are due to open by 2027 with minimum hours of 8am to 8pm, six days a week.
  • The programme targets 120 centres by 2030 and 250 by 2036, with the first 120 split between 50 refurbishments and 70 new builds.
  • Coverage cites mixed funding figures beyond the initial £50 million, with several reports referring to a £200 million pot for the first 50 centres.
