Government Challenges 'Cristina Libre' Event at La Plata Secondary School as Illegal

The dispute tests university autonomy against national rules on partisan acts in schools.

Overview

  • The Subsecretary of University Policies sent the rector a formal letter Thursday that labels the event illegal and urges him to stop it.
  • Instituto Patria plans the 'Cristina Libre' rally for Friday at 6 p.m. in the Colegio Nacional Rafael Hernández auditorium in La Plata.
  • In the letter, Alejandro Álvarez cites Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s six-year fraud conviction and lifetime ban, which he says the Supreme Court upheld, and warns the slogan could be an “apology of a crime” under Penal Code Article 213.
  • He also argues a secondary school hosts minors and points to Education Law 26.206 and Child Protection Law 26.061 that bar partisan indoctrination, even though classes would be over at that hour.
  • UNLP sources say the central presidency did not authorize the booking and note that each faculty or college controls its venues, leaving whether the rally proceeds unresolved.
