Gore Mountain Gondola Reopens After Rescue of 67

Officials say a misaligned tower wheel triggered safety sensors, prompting a five-hour rope evacuation by trained crews.

Overview

  • The Northwoods Gondola stalled around 9 a.m. on Feb. 4 at Gore Mountain in North Creek, New York, and all riders were eventually brought down without reported injuries.
  • Approximately 67 guests in roughly 15 to 20 cabins were stranded as high as about 70 feet before rescuers reached them.
  • Mountain operations staff, ski patrol and state park rangers climbed towers and used ropes and harnesses to lower passengers in an operation completed by about 2 p.m.
  • ORDA said a tower wheel assembly shifted out of alignment and triggered safety sensors that immediately stopped the lift, describing it as a non-emergency mechanical alignment issue.
  • After inspection, the gondola was cleared and reopened the next morning, and officials noted prior joint evacuation training in November aided the response.
