Gordie Howe Bridge Sets Tolls, Launches Breakaway Discount Ahead of Spring Opening

Officials say electronic discounts with automated lanes will speed border traffic upon opening this spring.

Overview

  • Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority set passenger vehicle tolls at $8 CAD/$5.75 USD each way and $12 CAD/$8.75 USD per axle for commercial, oversized and larger passenger vehicles.
  • The Breakaway tag provides a 25% discount—$6 CAD/$4.35 USD for cars and $9.60 CAD/$6.90 USD per axle—using automatic, any-lane tolling.
  • Enrollment opened for business accounts, with personal accounts to follow, as testing and commissioning continue with no exact opening date set beyond spring 2026.
  • Announced prices undercut the Ambassador Bridge ($10 USD for cars; up to $20 USD per axle for trucks, or $15 with an account) and are lower than the Detroit–Windsor Tunnel ($9 USD for cars).
  • The publicly financed crossing will link Highway 401 and I-75 via six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes and 60 inspection lanes, with Canada planning to recover costs through toll revenue.
