Goose Dating App Faces Claims That AI Personas Recruited Users

Published reporting says a network of likely AI-generated Instagram accounts directly messaged gay men to drive sign-ups, creating questions about deception, platform rules, and user safety.

Overview

  • A WIRED investigation published July 1 identified more than two dozen new Instagram accounts created in May and June 2026 that used similar language and invite codes to recruit men to Goose via DMs and Close Friends Stories.
  • Multiple AI-detection tools including Google Gemini/SynthID flagged many of the profile photos used in the campaign as edited or likely AI-generated, and several promotional accounts have since been deactivated or made private.
  • Reporting ties Goose to founders Derek Chadwick and David Aliagas and notes Aliagas posted Instagram Stories recruiting paid “ambassadors” and offering to buy ‘finstas,’ which reporters say suggests organized amplification.
  • The app saw an early spike in downloads — briefly rising to the top five in the App Store’s free lifestyle chart — and has collected user reviews while the company and founders have not publicly answered reporters’ requests for comment.
  • Lawyers and industry rules cited in the coverage say creating fake accounts or undisclosed AI promotions can violate FTC guidelines and state disclosure laws, raising reputational, regulatory, and trust risks for users of queer dating platforms.
