Google Wins $10 Million Bid for Spirit Airlines’ Internal Data

A court hearing on August 19 will decide final approval after a third party deidentifies the records before transfer.

Overview

  • Google emerged as the winning bidder in a bankruptcy auction reported on August 17, offering $10 million for a large corpus of Spirit Airlines’ internal business data.
  • The assets include roughly 100 million emails, about 500 million Microsoft Teams messages, millions of files, and source code repositories that document operations, pricing, maintenance and staff workflows.
  • The purchase excludes Spirit’s passenger profiles, loyalty accounts and direct payment information and requires a third party to rigorously remove personally identifiable information before Google takes possession.
  • Google beat rival bids from AI training firm Mercor and says it will use the deidentified dataset to improve products and train AI models, but the sale remains subject to Southern District of New York court approval.
  • The deal highlights a growing market for bankrupt companies to monetize internal archives for AI use and raises fresh questions about how effective deidentification is, how courts will oversee transfers, and what limits buyers must accept to protect privacy.
