Google Tightens Android Anti-Theft Protections With Stricter Lockouts and Broader Biometric Checks

The protections begin rolling out now across Android, with key upgrades tied to Android 16.

Overview

  • Android’s Failed Authentication Lock now triggers after seven incorrect PIN, pattern or password attempts within 15 minutes, stops counting identical repeats, and enforces longer lockouts.
  • Users can toggle the Failed Authentication Lock in settings and choose actions after repeated failures, including an automatic display lock when apps or system areas are targeted.
  • Identity Check expands to third‑party apps and Google’s password manager on Android 16, with more frequent biometrics outside trusted locations and protection for critical actions like factory reset or account removal.
  • Remote Lock adds an optional security question to prevent misuse and is available via android.com/lock on devices running Android 10 and newer.
  • Google has begun delivering the updates and will enable Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock by default on newly activated Android devices in Brazil.
