Google Taps DTE for Michigan Data Center, Pledges 2.7 GW of New Clean Power

The deal uses Google's Clean Transition Tariff to steer new capacity, with Google covering all power and infrastructure costs.

Overview

  • Google says the 2.7 GW package will add clean, around-the-clock power to the grid and support Michigan’s transition away from coal-fired generation.
  • A reported breakdown includes 1.6 GW of solar, 400 MW of four-hour storage, 50 MW of long-duration storage, 300 MW of additional clean resources, and 350 MW from demand response.
  • The agreement follows the company’s tariff-based approach previously applied with Xcel Energy to integrate new resources into utility planning.
  • Google will fund its electricity use and infrastructure, which it says protects local ratepayers and bolsters grid resilience.
  • The company launched a $10 million Energy Impact Fund for local energy affordability and is evaluating a site in Van Buren Township, with some resource definitions and demand-response operations still unspecified.
