Google Rolls Out Vertical Tabs and Immersive Reader for Chrome on Desktop

The update targets faster tab management to reduce on-screen clutter.

Overview

  • Google Chrome, which began rolling out the update Tuesday, adds an optional vertical tab layout and a full-page reading mode for desktop users.
  • Vertical tabs place your open pages in a left sidebar so titles stay readable and tab groups are easier to manage when many tabs are open.
  • To enable the sidebar, right-click the top of a Chrome window and choose “Show Tabs Vertically,” then pick expanded titles or a compact favicon-only view.
  • Reading mode opens a distraction-free, full-page view for long articles with text-to-speech and simple controls, and you can launch it from a page’s menu or the address bar.
  • Availability starts today and will appear as your browser updates, reflecting Google’s gradual rollouts and its move toward features long offered in rival browsers.
