Google Rolls Out India AI Package With $8 Million for CoEs, MedGemma Health Push, Indic Hub and 150 MW Solar

The moves integrate with the IndiaAI Mission to expand public-purpose research and services.

Overview

  • Google.org is granting $8 million to four government-aligned AI Centres of Excellence at IISc Bangalore, IIT Kanpur, IIT Madras and IIT Ropar focused on health, urban governance, education and agriculture.
  • A $400,000 commitment will support an India Health Foundation Model using MedGemma, with Ajna Lens working with AIIMS on dermatology and OPD triaging, plus work with the National Health Authority on FHIR record standardization and plans to map roughly 400,000 health facilities.
  • A $2 million founding contribution will establish an Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at IIT Bombay to advance language tools for India’s linguistic diversity.
  • Ecosystem support includes $4.5 million for Wadhwani AI’s multilingual apps in health and agriculture, $50,000 grants each to Gnani.AI, CoRover.AI and BharatGen, and the upload of 22 Gemma models to AI Kosh for developers.
  • Google also announced a 150 MW solar partnership with ReNew Energy in Rajasthan, while Indian officials framed the CoE funding as part of a coordinated national AI research mission.
