Google Rolls Out Gemini Voice Navigation for Walking and Cycling in Maps

The AI assistant enables hands-free guidance with local context and quick voice-sent updates.

Overview

  • The update is rolling out now on iOS and Android in countries where Gemini is available, with distribution progressing gradually over the coming days.
  • Users can ask by voice for neighborhood details, nearby well-rated restaurants, estimated arrival times and calendar info, and can compose and send short messages.
  • The assistant draws on real-time Search and the Knowledge Graph and can use Street View context to describe surroundings and recommend places along a route.
  • Use requires the Gemini app, a Google account and selecting Gemini as the assistant, with optional Gmail, Docs and Calendar linking to enable contextual actions.
  • Some capabilities are not yet offered in parts of the EU, and the hands-free design targets safer, no-touch operation for cyclists and pedestrians.
