Google Rolls Out Gemini Tools To Import AI Memories and Chat History

The move aims to cut switching costs by carrying over personal context into Google's broader Personal Intelligence.

Overview

  • Google rolled out the tools Thursday, adding Import Memory and Import Chat History to Gemini’s Settings.
  • Import Memory has you paste a Gemini prompt into your old chatbot, then paste its summary back to teach preferences and context, which feed Personal Intelligence that can use Gmail, Photos and Search with permission.
  • Import Chat History lets you upload .zip exports from rivals like ChatGPT or Claude with a 5 GB cap per file and up to five uploads per day, and only text moves over while images, files and attachments do not.
  • Imported threads appear in Gemini’s sidebar with an import icon, are searchable, and can be deleted individually or by removing an entire upload.
  • The rollout targets consumer accounts and is unavailable in the EEA, Switzerland and the UK, with business, enterprise and under‑18 accounts excluded and availability varying by platform.
