Google Rolls Out Gemini AI Overviews to Gmail for Workspace

The update lets users ask plain questions in Gmail search to get answers pulled from across emails.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out the feature to Workspace accounts on Wednesday, and the company says it could take up to 15 days to reach all eligible users.
  • Gmail search now accepts natural-language questions and shows a short summary drawn from multiple emails, which helps people find details without opening messages.
  • Two versions are available: free thread summaries in long email chains, plus inbox-question answers for paid Google AI Pro or Ultra on consumer accounts and for eligible Workspace plans.
  • The feature is on by default only when admins enable Gemini for Workspace and Workspace Intelligence access and when users keep Gmail smart features turned on, though anyone can opt out in settings.
  • Google also expanded AI Overviews in Drive beyond its beta, making document summaries broadly available to eligible Workspace and Google AI plans.
