Google Redesigns AI Search to Surface Source Links With Hover Previews

Google says clearer citations will help users reach original reporting, with results to be measured over time.

Overview

  • Robby Stein, Google Search VP, announced that on desktop a hover over cited sources in AI Overviews and AI Mode now opens a pop-up showing grouped links with site names, favicons, headlines, descriptions, and images.
  • Google is also rolling out more descriptive, prominent link icons within AI responses on both desktop and mobile, with the desktop icon displaying the first source’s logo.
  • The company says internal testing finds the new interface more engaging and designed to make it easier to jump to content across the web.
  • Independent analyses cited in coverage report reduced referral activity since AI summaries expanded, including Pew’s finding that only about 1% of visits with a summary resulted in a click within it and GrowthSRC’s drop in top organic CTR from 28% to 19%.
  • Publishers and regulators are watching for real-world impact as the European Commission probes Google’s use of publisher content, and Google says it is exploring publisher opt-outs and has added more links in AI Mode.
