Google Puts Gemini at the Center of Maps With ‘Ask Maps’ and 3D Immersive Navigation

The launch caps a week of staged Gemini integrations across core Google apps.

Overview

  • Ask Maps lets users pose complex, conversational location queries, analyzes reviews and photos to tailor answers, and can turn suggestions into actions like saving places, getting directions or booking a table.
  • Immersive Navigation replaces the flat map with a 3D driving view that highlights lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights and stop signs, adds more natural voice guidance, explains route tradeoffs and previews parking and entrances via Street View.
  • Availability is phased: Ask Maps is rolling out on Android and iOS in the United States and India with desktop to follow, while Immersive Navigation begins a U.S.-first rollout across iOS, Android, CarPlay, Android Auto and cars with Google built‑in, expanding over the coming months.
  • Gemini’s mapping features draw on Maps’ vast dataset—hundreds of millions of places with contributions from hundreds of millions of users—and on Street View and aerial imagery, with Google emphasizing AI guardrails to reduce hallucinated results.
  • Earlier this week, Google began beta rollouts of Gemini-powered creation tools in Workspace for paying AI Pro/Ultra subscribers and Gemini Alpha business customers, with Docs/Sheets/Slides available globally in English and new Drive tools launching first in the U.S.
