Google Plans Summer Rollout of AI Search Summaries and Conversational Mode in France

Publishers warn the feature could cut web traffic, prompting collective talks over payment, data use, legal responsibility before rollout.

Overview

  • Google told French publishers it intends to deploy AI Overviews and an AI Mode this summer and proposed three commitments: publishers may choose to appear, they will receive separate audience metrics, and about 450 publishers covered by neighboring-rights deals would be paid for AI displays.
  • AI Overviews are short AI-generated summaries placed above regular search results and AI Mode enables multi-question, conversational searches powered by Google’s Gemini model.
  • Research shows users click far less when AI Overviews appear; a 2025 Pew study found roughly 8% of users clicked a result after an overview appeared, a drop publishers say threatens ad and subscription income.
  • Google says publishers can opt out of appearing and that classic search rankings will not be affected, but publisher groups are demanding collective negotiations on remuneration, data use and who is accountable for AI outputs.
  • No exact launch date has been given so talks between Google and French media are expected to shape final terms and could influence newsroom budgets, audience access and competition among search engines.
