Google Photos Adds Video Remix Powered by Gemini Omni

The tool turns ordinary clips into shareable videos by using Gemini Omni to relight scenes, isolate subjects and swap backgrounds while access is restricted to paid Google AI subscribers in select countries.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out Video Remix on July 8, 2026, as a new option in the Photos Create tab that uses the multimodal Gemini Omni model to edit video clips in seconds.
  • The feature offers cinematic relighting, semantic subject segmentation, background replacement and artistic styles such as watercolor, sketchbook and oil painting through template-driven prompts.
  • Video Remix targets casual mobile users by automating common fixes like boosting exposure in dark clips and swapping messy backgrounds rather than offering professional timeline or manual controls.
  • Access is limited to adult subscribers on Google AI Plus, Pro, or Ultra plans and is available initially in a set of countries including the U.S., India, Japan, Brazil, Mexico and South Korea.
  • The launch extends Google Photos’ prior Remix and AI editing tools and signals Google’s strategy of embedding generative AI into consumer apps to drive subscriptions and compete with Apple, Adobe and AI startups.
