Google Messages Rolls Out Real-Time Location Sharing as Maps Tests One-Tap Sharing

The Messages update adds timed controls, an in-thread map, plus a prominent privacy banner.

Overview

  • Google is expanding real-time location sharing inside Google Messages, accessible from the “+” menu with a live map embedded directly in the chat.
  • The feature operates only in RCS conversations, and some users may be prompted to sign in to a Google account before sharing.
  • Users can choose how long to share their location—including 1 hour, today only, until turned off, or a custom time up to 24 hours—with a banner that clearly shows when sharing is active.
  • The previous option to send a single Google Maps link remains available as “One-time Location.”
  • Separately, app teardowns show Google Maps testing a location-sharing floating button and a simplified driving controls sheet in version 26.12.03.884026066, features found behind hidden flags and not officially announced.
