Google Messages Adds On-Device Nudity Filter for Images

Teen profiles are covered by default; child accounts cannot disable it under Family Link supervision

Overview

  • The filter blurs or warns users when they send, receive, or forward still images containing nudity.
  • Videos are exempt from detection and will display without blur or warning.
  • Detection is performed locally by a hidden system component called SafetyCore with no data sent to Google.
  • Users can bypass the filter by uninstalling SafetyCore through Android settings.
  • Google acknowledges that the classifier is not foolproof and may both miss nude content and flag benign images.
