Google Meet Now Works in Safari on iPhone and iPad

The change lets people without the Meet or Gmail app or a Google account join calls through a browser, reducing the need to install an app for one-off meetings.

Overview

  • Google began rolling out Safari web support for Meet on Tuesday, June 23, allowing iPhone and iPad users to open Meet links in the browser instead of installing the Meet or Gmail app.
  • People who do not have a Google account can join meetings from Safari by entering a name to request entry, making guest participation simpler.
  • Google says the rollout is phased so some users may still see prompts to open the native app, and devices that already have Meet or Gmail installed may continue to route to the app until the change reaches them.
  • Because all iOS browsers use Apple’s WebKit engine, Google’s Safari support effectively extends to other iOS browsers and restores feature parity with desktop web joining.
  • The update should cut friction for occasional attendees and external guests and could make it easier for businesses, schools, and organizers to invite participants who won’t install Google apps.
