Google Meet Arrives on Apple CarPlay With Audio-Only Calls

The launch signals a safety-first push onto in-car screens before Google brings the same support to Android Auto.

Overview

  • Google announced Thursday that Meet now works on Apple CarPlay, letting iPhone users join meetings from the car’s dashboard.
  • Drivers can tap to join scheduled meetings and see their agenda on the CarPlay display, with audio routed to the car’s speakers and the vehicle microphone handling input.
  • The experience is audio-only to reduce distraction, so the camera is off and no incoming video or presentations appear on the screen.
  • In-car controls are limited to mute, unmute, and leave, and features like Chat, Hand Raise, Polls, Q&A, new meeting creation, and host admit are not available while driving.
  • The update is rolling out over about 15 days to all Google Workspace tiers and personal accounts, and Google says Android Auto support is coming soon with no timeline.
