Google Makes Gemini 3.5 Flash the Default, Unveils Spark Agents and Omni Video at I/O

The rollout shifts Google services toward faster replies with agents that work in the background.

Overview

  • Google, which announced the changes Tuesday at I/O, began making Gemini 3.5 Flash the default in the Gemini app and in AI Mode in Search worldwide.
  • Google Search now runs AI Mode on 3.5 Flash, adds an expanding search box for longer multimodal queries, and introduces background agents and custom dashboards for subscribers in the U.S. this summer.
  • Gemini Spark, a cloud agent that keeps working when devices are closed, is rolling out to trusted testers now with a U.S. AI Ultra beta next week and asks for approval before high‑stakes actions like purchases or emails.
  • Gemini Omni Flash starts generating and conversationally editing video for AI Plus, Pro and Ultra subscribers in the app and Google Flow, with free access on YouTube Shorts and the Create app.
  • Google set timelines for other features, with Universal Cart coming to Search and the Gemini app in the U.S. this summer, Android Halo arriving later this year, Android XR audio glasses due this fall, and content provenance checks expanding to Search and Chrome.
