Overview
- Google has begun a staged rollout that lets Live Translate run without an internet connection on Pixel 9, Pixel 10, and Pixel 11 series phones.
- Offline conversation support is limited to English paired with ten languages: French, German, Portuguese, Italian, Spanish, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Russian, and Swedish.
- The offline mode requires at least one speaker to use English, so it cannot translate directly between two non-English languages.
- Reports say the feature runs on-device using newer Gemini speech models and stronger NPUs and memory, which likely explains why older Pixels and other brands are excluded.
- On-device translation lowers lag, uses no mobile data, and can improve privacy for travelers, but the narrow language set and device limits mean most users cannot access it yet.
