Google Brings Gmail End-to-End Encryption to Android and iOS for Enterprise

Client-side encryption lets organizations keep their own keys to meet compliance needs.

Overview

  • Google said Friday that Gmail end-to-end encryption now works in the Android and iOS apps for eligible Workspace customers.
  • Access is limited to Enterprise Plus accounts with the Assured Controls or Assured Controls Plus add-on, and admins must enable the mobile clients in the CSE section of the Admin Console.
  • The rollout is live in both Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains, so organizations can deploy it immediately once enabled.
  • Encrypted emails arrive as normal threads in the Gmail app, and other recipients use a secure web page to read and reply without extra software.
  • Users turn on protection per message by tapping the lock icon and choosing Additional encryption, with client-side keys held outside Google to meet data-sovereignty and health-privacy rules.
