Google Begins Native Gemini Rollout in Chrome for U.S. Desktops

Google is turning Chrome into a context‑aware assistant to keep users inside its ecosystem.

Overview

  • An AI Mode in the Omnibox brings conversational, on‑page queries that surface answers and links without leaving the current tab.
  • Gemini can use context from open tabs and recent browsing and can connect to Google services such as Docs, Calendar, YouTube and Maps to summarize and retrieve relevant info.
  • Agent features are slated to follow, with the assistant filling shopping carts, booking appointments, scheduling tasks and drafting emails while pausing for approval on irreversible actions.
  • The initial rollout targets Windows and macOS in the United States with English required, mobile support is planned, and access in Chrome does not require a subscription.
  • The integration is not active in the European Union as a German coalition prepares a Digital Services Act complaint over competition and privacy concerns.
