Google Adds 'How This Ad Was Made' Panel to Show When Ads Use Generative AI

The feature adds provenance details to My Ad Center, shifting disclosure responsibility to advertisers for AI content made outside Google's tools.

Overview

  • Google announced the rollout on Thursday, July 9, 2026, by adding a “How this ad was made” section to the My Ad Center menu on Search, YouTube and Discover.
  • Ads created with Google’s own generative-ad tools will carry automatic disclosures inside the My Ad Center panel so users can see that AI was used.
  • For ads made with external AI tools, Google is providing a new advertiser-facing control that requires brands to indicate AI use and Google will not independently verify those claims.
  • Depending on local laws, AI disclosure labels may also appear directly on ads in some markets, and Google says it already embeds imperceptible provenance signals such as SynthID in outputs from its tools.
  • This change aims to help users spot AI-made or edited ads but could leave gaps in practice if advertisers fail to self-report, so expect more pressure on ad verification and possible regulatory scrutiny next.
