Gomez Leads 'Mass for Peace' in L.A. as Student Protest Targets Detention Center

The archdiocese cast the day as pastoral support for immigrants facing stepped-up enforcement.

Overview

  • Archbishop José H. Gomez celebrated a 12:10 p.m. Mass for Peace at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels and declared a Day of Prayer for Peace across the archdiocese.
  • The liturgy was followed by a Holy Hour led by Cathedral Pastor Fr. David Gallardo, aligning with a nationwide appeal from the U.S. bishops for Holy Hours for peace.
  • During his remarks, Gomez focused prayers on immigrants, public officials, law enforcement and demonstrators, urging a renewed national conscience without a direct policy rebuke.
  • At the same time, more than 500 students walked out of classes and marched to the Metropolitan Detention Center, where police monitored the gathering.
  • The LAPD reported 51 arrests at anti-ICE protests the previous Saturday, and Gomez has advocated limiting deportations to violent offenders and holding hearings on H.R. 4393.
