GOG Persuaded Capcom to Re-Release Original Resident Evil PC Ports After Remake Pushback

Strong sales with roughly 94% positive reviews on GOG demonstrated demand for preserved originals.

Overview

  • Senior business development manager Marcin Paczynski says Capcom initially argued its remakes were the superior experience and questioned the value of the vanilla versions.
  • GOG updated the original PC releases of Resident Evil 1–3 for modern compatibility, adding Windows 10/11 support, new rendering options, controller support, improved cutscene timing, an updated video player, DirectX fixes, and unlocked modes.
  • The refreshed releases drew an overwhelmingly positive user response on GOG at around 94% favorable reviews and delivered strong sales, according to the company.
  • Following that reception, Capcom approved GOG releases of the original PC ports of Dino Crisis and Dino Crisis 2 in January 2025.
  • All five titles are part of GOG’s Preservation Program, which pledges ongoing playability on modern systems and is projected to encompass roughly 350 games by the end of 2025.
