Goat-Farm Operators to Face Trial in Landsberg Over Mass Neglect

Prosecutors say the indictment accuses the couple of causing prolonged suffering to dozens of animals and the case will test enforcement of Germany’s animal protection law.

Overview

  • A court in Landsberg has set a criminal trial for 25 November 2026 after judges admitted an indictment charging the two farm operators with violations of the Tierschutzgesetz.
  • A tip led authorities to the farm on 6 May 2025, when officials found 80 dead dairy goats and the local veterinary office rescued 41 severely weakened animals.
  • Pathological examinations concluded the dead animals died of starvation, dehydration and poor care, and prosecutors say at least 92 goats were subjected to prolonged and repeated severe pain.
  • The district administration of Landsberg imposed a ban on keeping livestock and filed a criminal complaint, and the accused have so far declined to comment to reporters.
  • The case has raised local outrage because the farm had marketed itself as a model operation that sold cheese directly to markets, and questions remain about the whereabouts of roughly 150 other goats and whether oversight of small livestock holdings will change.
