Gnosis Chain Votes to Become an Ethereum-Settled ZK Rollup

The vote hands settlement to Ethereum validators, triggers a large GNO unlock, and defers sequencer, funding and revenue decisions to future governance.

Overview

  • GnosisDAO approved GIP-153 as a direction-level mandate that directs Gnosis Chain to convert from an independent Proof-of-Stake Layer 1 into a zero-knowledge rollup that settles on Ethereum.
  • The Snapshot vote passed with 99.78% support, which on Thursday provided the community mandate to begin phased planning rather than finalize technical designs or funding.
  • The transition will retire Gnosis’s validator set, which grew to more than 100,000 nodes, and shift settlement and security responsibilities to Ethereum validators while keeping Gnosis’s execution environment.
  • About 350,000 GNO currently locked in staking — roughly 27% of circulating supply — will become liquid when validators are retired and GNO will lose its staking role pending a new revenue model.
  • Key open decisions include who runs the sequencer, how rollup revenue will be tied to GNO (fee sharing or buybacks are options), and an implementation window targeted for late 2026 to early 2027.
