Overview
- GMR announced a confirmed initial investment of ₹300 crore on Wednesday to start terminal refurbishment and access upgrades at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport, with work due to finish in 12 to 18 months.
- The company set out a three‑phase timetable that moves from immediate terminal and landside upgrades to a new integrated terminal and cargo terminal in 3–4 years, and a second runway, new ATC and utilities in years five to eight.
- Administrative control for the project followed the June 25 handover of roughly 1,000 hectares from Maharashtra Airport Infrastructure Ltd to GNIAL, which allowed GMR Nagpur International Airport Ltd to begin operations and implement the roadmap.
- First‑phase passenger improvements include more check‑in counters and self‑service kiosks, an expanded security screening area with an express lane, upgraded washrooms and lounges, widened forecourt access and more bus boarding gates.
- GMR plans nearly 100 hectares of Aerocity commercial development, a long‑term cargo target of 150,000 tonnes per year, on‑site solar, rainwater harvesting, an underground fuel hydrant system and a skills centre to drive jobs and regional logistics growth.
