GM Begins Over-the-Air Rollout of Google Gemini to 4 Million U.S. Vehicles

The move signals GM's push toward a software-led cockpit with deeper OnStar-driven features due later this year.

Overview

  • GM is sending a no-charge update to 2022 and newer Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC models with Google built-in, replacing Google Assistant with Gemini.
  • Owners will see an on-screen prompt to switch, and the update requires an active OnStar connection, a Google Play sign-in, U.S. English, and an explicit opt-in.
  • Gemini offers natural voice conversations, can read and draft texts, plans routes with added stops, handles follow-up requests, and links to apps like Spotify, Audible, and YouTube.
  • The rollout will take place over several months, starts in the United States with U.S. English, and GM says more markets and languages will follow.
  • GM frames Gemini as a foundation for a more vehicle-aware, OnStar-shaped assistant later this year as it moves away from Apple CarPlay and Android Auto toward its own software stack.
