GLWA Declares 42-Inch Main Repaired in Oakland County Water Emergency

Pressure restoration will precede mandated bacteria testing before any boil notices lift.

Overview

  • GLWA said the ruptured 42-inch main, which burst around 1:30 a.m. Sunday, held when the new steel section was filled at 2 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Crews are flushing local systems now, with pressure restoration targeted for Thursday before any talk of lifting boil notices.
  • Bacteriological samples will incubate through required lab timelines, so earliest test results are expected Sunday or Monday.
  • Boil advisories and strict water-use limits remain in parts of Orion Township, Lake Orion, Auburn Hills, Rochester Hills and Oakland Township, and water trucks are distributing supplies daily from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Officials say the failed 1975 pre-stressed concrete cylinder pipe is being lab-tested for a possible manufacturing anomaly, a known issue in a small share of this pipe type that is costly to replace.
