GLP‑1 Drugs Linked to Lower Cancer Spread and Death in Large Observational Study

Researchers urged randomized trials to test whether the database links reflect true anti‑cancer effects from GLP‑1 drugs.

  • At the American Society of Clinical Oncology meeting in Chicago, investigators presented a health‑database analysis of more than 12,000 early‑ and intermediate‑stage cancer patients that found associations between post‑diagnosis GLP‑1 exposure and reduced metastasis and mortality.
  • For four cancers including breast, liver, colon and lung the analysis reported 38–50 percent lower risk of developing metastases and an overall 33 percent lower mortality with a 45 percent lower mortality reported for breast cancer.
  • The drugs studied are GLP‑1 receptor agonists already used for diabetes and weight loss, notably semaglutide (Ozempic, Wegovy), tirzepatide (Mounjaro), liraglutide and dulaglutide.
  • Experts say there is biological plausibility because GLP‑1 drugs have anti‑inflammatory and immune‑modulating effects that could influence tumor behavior or host response.
  • Authors and ASCO cautioned the results are observational, not proof of cause, and called for prospective randomized trials and lab studies to rule out confounding, define timing and dose, and establish safety before any change to cancer care.
