Gloucester Set for Funeral of Lily Jean Captain After Deadly Sinking Off Cape Ann

A packed service underscores the city’s grief alongside a push to support the seven families through a verified fund.

Overview

  • The funeral Mass for Accursio “Gus” Sanfilippo is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Ann’s Holy Family Parish in Gloucester, with Gov. Maura Healey expected to attend.
  • Hundreds lined up for Monday’s wake, and a large turnout is expected at the church to honor the longtime Gloucester fisherman and community figure.
  • Only Sanfilippo’s body has been recovered since the 72-foot Lily Jean sank about 25 miles off Cape Ann on Jan. 30, and the Coast Guard called off the search the next day.
  • Officials identified the other six presumed dead as Paul Beal Sr., Paul Beal Jr., John Rousanidis, Freeman Short, Sean Therrien, and NOAA fisheries observer Jada Samitt; the vessel and those remains have not been found.
  • A verified Lily Jean Fund at fvlilyjeanfund.org has been established to split donations equally among the seven families.
