Glen Hansard Dies in Dublin Motorcycle Crash as Funeral Plans Announced

Gardaí say specialist collision investigators are probing the scene, tracing his final hours and seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage to compile a coroner’s file.

Overview

  • Glen Hansard, the Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter, died after a single-vehicle motorcycle collision near the Strawberry Beds in Lucan that occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29.
  • Gardaí and Forensic Collision Investigators have preserved the scene and developed a working theory that the bike struck a soft roadside verge, lost control and flipped, a finding that remains subject to formal forensic and coroner processes.
  • Investigators are reconstructing Hansard’s movements in the roughly four hours after he left The Wren’s Nest pub and are asking anyone with relevant information or camera footage, including dash-cams, to contact Lucan Garda Station or the Garda confidential line.
  • Hansard’s family has announced a public wake at the Baroque Chapel, IMMA, on Monday August 3 and a public funeral at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday August 4 at 1:30 p.m., with very limited cathedral access, an outside PA and live broadcasts, and they asked for donations to the Simon Community or Ukrainian Action instead of flowers.
  • Friends, fellow musicians and international figures have paid wide tribute to Hansard’s musical and community work, and Gardaí warn that the specialist probe could take weeks to finish while a coroner’s file and inquest are prepared.
