Glasgow Father and Daughter Plead Guilty to Attempted Murder After 15-Hour Hostage Ordeal

May sentencing will assess prior convictions as well as the gravity of the harm.

Overview

  • John McGinley, 58, and his daughter Stacey, 39, admitted attempted murder and related charges at the High Court in Glasgow, and Lord Mulholland remanded them in custody with sentencing set for May.
  • Prosecutors said the violence began over an alleged £600 debt on February 15, 2025, when Duncan Craig tried to flee from a first-floor window at the Carntyne flat and John pushed him into a neighbour's garden.
  • The court heard the pair then held Mr Craig for hours and assaulted him repeatedly, including stripping him, punching and biting him, forcing an object into his ear, spraying hairspray into head wounds, using knives, and choking him.
  • Another woman in the flat secretly texted for help, and firearms officers arrived at 5:26pm, arrested the McGinleys, and had Mr Craig taken to hospital with a fractured hip, a dislocated shoulder, missing teeth, and stamp, bite, and strangulation marks; he was discharged on March 3 after rehab.
  • Both also admitted abduction and attempted extortion after forcing Mr Craig to seek money from his mother, and prosecutors noted more than 20 prior convictions between them, including a past high-court drugs sentence for John.
