Gkids Secures U.K. and Ireland Rights to Studio Ghibli Library

The deal lets Gkids reintroduce Ghibli films in cinemas and on home video while streaming rights remain with Goodfellas licensed to Netflix.

Overview

  • Gkids announced on Thursday, July 2, 2026, that it has acquired theatrical, home-video, TV and digital rights to Studio Ghibli’s 23-film library for the U.K. and Ireland.
  • The first title under the agreement will be an IMAX release of Kiki’s Delivery Service on August 21, 2026, with additional IMAX dates already planned.
  • Goodfellas keeps streaming rights for the territories and has licensed those rights to Netflix, so the films will appear on Netflix while Gkids handles theatrical and disc releases.
  • Gkids will work with Anime Limited, recently acquired by parent Toho Global, and has announced new 4K remasters and a full home-video and digital re-release starting in fall 2026.
  • The shift extends Gkids’ long-standing Ghibli role from North America to the U.K. and Ireland and could increase cinema access and collector releases for fans who have seen limited availability in recent years.
