Gibson Wraps Two-Part Sequel, Releases First Images and Sets New 2027–28 Dates

Gibson calls the films an experimental, decades-long personal project that will reach global audiences with Lionsgate handling international distribution.

Overview

  • This week Mel Gibson unveiled the first official images for The Resurrection of the Christ and confirmed production has finished after 134 days of shooting across multiple Italian locations.
  • The sequel will be released in two parts, with Part 1 scheduled for May 6, 2027 and Part 2 scheduled for May 25, 2028 following earlier delays.
  • Casting changes include Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen as Jesus and Mariela Garriga as Mary Magdalene, supported by Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett.
  • Gibson said he co-wrote the scripts with Randall Wallace and described the project as a more experimental, hallucinatory work that he has pursued as a personal mission for over two decades.
  • Lionsgate is reported to handle international distribution, and the films carry high commercial expectations because the original 2004 film grossed more than $610 million worldwide.
